Edmonton, Alberta -- The Sierra Club Canada Foundation applauds today’s announcement by the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, for the creation of a new network of national urban parks, including a potential National Urban Park in the greater Edmonton area.

Kjipuktuk, Nova Scotia - Sierra Club Atlantic’s new Beyond Climate Promises report is calling for urgent action and accountability on climate change, forestry, and a just transition. Sierra Club Atlantic submitted the report to the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Climate Change last night as part of the public consultation on the Sustainable Development Goals Act and New Climate Change Plan for Clean Growth, which closed July 26.

Our organizations are committed to the work of reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and Nations in Canada. 

We recognize that Indigenous peoples face barriers within the legal system, an extension of the systemic racism which permeates Canada’s public institutions. As predominantly settler organizations, it is incumbent on us to name and address systemic inequities and biases that disproportionately harm Indigenous peoples and communities.

In the days leading up to the Sipekne’katik First Nation’s plans to fish outside of the commercial fishing season, members of multiple faith traditions will be taking time to pray and meditate for two things: that the Sipekne’katik First Nation fishery will not be subjected to violence; and that Indigenous moderate livelihood fishing rights be respected.

Environmental groups head to court to fight blanket exemption for exploratory drilling

Ecojustice will be in court today to challenge the federal government’s failure to properly assess the impact of exploratory drilling for oil and gas on ecosystems off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, and its attempt to exempt all future exploratory drilling from assessment.
