K’jiipuktuk / /Halifax - The new Environmental and Climate Reduction Act introduced in the Nova Scotia Legislature today is a good step in the right direction. Sierra Club Canada Foundation is pleased to see the inclusion of legislated target dates, including the phase-out of coal-fired electricity generation by 2030. We’re also glad to see more focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion and assurances that sustainable prosperity will be part of every government department’s mandate.

The Sierra Club Canada Foundation (SCCF), in partnership with the Sierra Club of BC, will have representatives on the ground at the Global Climate Summit in Glasgow this November. The SCCF will be closely following the summit, and are eager to see how nations work together to reach an agreement on how to tackle the dual climate change and biodiversity crises.

Politicians must show leadership on mega-hydro

Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL - The Sierra Club Canada Foundation, Grand Riverkeeper, and North American Megadam Resistance Alliance submitted a letter today to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as well as the premiers of the Atlantic provinces calling on them to oppose the Gull Island mega-hydro project. The Gull Island project is proposed to be built in the Grand River/Mistashipu area (colonially known as Churchill River) of Labrador.

Seventy groups and organizations have called on the Prime Minister to include a moratorium on federal funding for nuclear expansion in the mandate letters to cabinet. Prime Minister Trudeau is expected to announce his new cabinet next week.

Prairie Chapter Wants to see Political Action on Water

Sierra Club Canada’s Prairie Chapter is calling on candidates and party leaders running in the federal election to act on water security.

The chapter says the prairies are a water stressed region and say leaders must come up with a plan to address the future of our drinking water, water withdrawal, and worsening droughts and floods in the region.

The Sierra Club Canada Foundation is calling on the leaders of Canada’s major political parties to commit to policies that will address the climate change and biodiversity crises being faced both globally and locally.

They are also calling for Indigenous People’s free, prior, and informed consent to be a requirement for all resource projects – meaning that if an Indigenous community says no to a project, that project would not go ahead. They say that Indigenous-led conservation is a must to reach conservation targets.
