Groups Roll Out Plastic Waste Carpet For Environment Ministers

K’JIPUKTUK (HALIFAX) – At noon today environmental groups are rolling out a carpet covered with plastic litter for delegates to Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) which is taking place at the Halifax Convention Centre on June 26 and 27. The groups are urging the Federal Government and ministers in attendance to act swiftly to implement a comprehensive Strategy on Zero Plastic Waste, including single-use plastic bans.

“With four dead right whales reported in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, more needs to be done to prevent more deaths,” states Gretchen Fitzgerald, National Program Director at Sierra Club Canada Foundation.

The cause of the deaths of the whales has not been determined but researchers are desperately trying to find out why these whales died. The 12 right whale deaths in the Gulf of St Lawrence in 2017 were linked to entanglements in fishing gear and ship strikes.

K’jipuktuk/Halifax: The federal government has rejected a number of amendments from the Senate, but not all. Life cycle regulator appointees can now chair review panels. The four life cycle regulators mentioned in the Bill C-69 are the Newfoundland and Nova Scotia Petroleum Boards, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and the new Canadian Energy Regulator.

Groups Condemn Plan To Exempt Nuclear Reactors From Bill C-69

Ottawa, May 7, 2019 — The Government of Canada is proposing that the "project list" for Bill C-69, the Impact Assessment Act, exempt many nuclear reactors from any environmental assessment.  Civil society groups are condemning the exemption from environmental assessment under Bill C-69 and demanding that all new nuclear reactors be subjected to formal environmental assessment, as is now the case.

Halifax, NS - An oil spill of an estimated 250,000 litres of crude oil in 7 metre seas shows we are lax in regulating our offshore. “Husky Oil is reporting they are unable to confirm extent of spill, never mind try and clean it up - a virtually impossible task in 7 metre seas. Our leaders are claiming this is world-class regulation. I think this spill shows we are far from that standard, says Gretchen Fitzgerald, National Program Director for Sierra Club Canada Foundation.
