Dear Friends,
Sierra Club Canada has long been sounding the alarm about Canada's last remaining underground coal mine, located in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Finally, just over a week ago, Nova Scotia’s Environment Minister acknowledged the Donkin coal mine’s enormous carbon footprint, referring to it as the second-largest emitter in the province.
Unfortunately, Nova Scotia's Department of Environment and Climate Change recently renewed Donkin Mine’s industrial approval, allowing the company to mine coal until 2030!
Not only is the Donkin coal mine responsible for massive amounts of fugitive methane emissions, but it has also destroyed local wetlands and ecosystems, and exposed nearby residents to harmful industrial noise pollution, airborne contaminants, hazardous trucking traffic—and more.
The community isn’t taking this lying down, and neither are we. We’re appealing the industrial approval given to the mining company, Kameron Coal.
